Chandelier Size Guide: How Big Should Your Chandelier Be?

A chandelier that is too small looks like an afterthought. One that is too big crowds the room and makes the ceiling feel lower. The good news: you don't need a designer to get it right. Three quick measurements, a tape measure and five minutes will tell you the right size for any room. This guide walks you through them, in inches, with worked examples.

Rule 1: Size a chandelier to the room

Measure the length and width of the room in feet and add them together. The result is a good chandelier diameter in inches.

  • 10 × 12 ft room: 10 + 12 = 22, so a chandelier around 22 inches wide.
  • 12 × 14 ft room: 12 + 14 = 26, so around 26 inches.
  • 14 × 16 ft room: 14 + 16 = 30, so around 30 inches.

Use this rule for living rooms, bedrooms and entries, where the chandelier lights the whole space rather than a table.

Rule 2: Over a dining table, size it to the table

When a chandelier hangs over a table, the table matters more than the room. Choose a chandelier one half to two thirds the width of the table, and keep at least 6 inches between the edge of the chandelier and the edge of the table on every side, so nobody bumps their head when they stand up.

  • 36 in wide table: chandelier 18 to 24 in wide.
  • 42 in wide table: chandelier 21 to 28 in wide.
  • 48 in round table: chandelier 24 to 32 in wide.

For a long rectangular table (over 72 in), one round chandelier can leave the ends dark. Choose a linear fixture about two thirds the length of the table, or two smaller chandeliers.

Rule 3: Size the height to the ceiling

Height matters as much as width. A simple guide: allow 2.5 to 3 inches of chandelier height for every foot of ceiling height.

  • 8 ft ceiling: chandelier 20 to 24 in tall, or a flatter, wider design.
  • 9 ft ceiling: 22 to 27 in tall.
  • 10 ft ceiling: 25 to 30 in tall.

With 8 ft ceilings, a low-profile ring or a flush-style chandelier usually looks better than a tall, tiered one.

How high should a chandelier hang?

  • Over a dining table: 30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom of the chandelier. Add about 3 inches for every foot of ceiling above 8 ft.
  • In a living room, bedroom or hallway: at least 7 ft (84 in) from the floor to the bottom, so people can walk underneath.
  • In a two-story entry: keep the bottom at least 7 ft from the floor, and if there is a window above the door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside.

Worked examples

  • Dining room 12 × 13 ft, 40 in round table, 8 ft ceiling: the table rule gives 20 to 27 in, the room rule gives 25 in. Choose about 24 in wide, low profile, hung 30 in above the table.
  • Living room 14 × 18 ft, 9 ft ceiling: 14 + 18 = 32, so a chandelier around 30 to 32 in wide and up to 27 in tall, at least 7 ft above the floor.
  • Bedroom 11 × 12 ft, 8 ft ceiling: 11 + 12 = 23, so a 20 to 23 in chandelier, preferably a flatter design so it doesn't feel low over the bed.

How bright should a chandelier be?

For a dining room, plan for about 30 to 40 lumens per square foot of the area you want to light, and put the chandelier on a dimmer. A 12 × 13 ft dining room is about 156 sq ft, so around 4,500 to 6,000 lumens if the chandelier is the only light, or less if you also have recessed lights or sconces. In bedrooms and living rooms, softer, warm white light (2700 to 3000K) is usually more comfortable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying too small. The most common mistake by far. A chandelier always looks bigger in the box than on the ceiling, so when you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
  • Centering on the room instead of the table. In a dining room, center the chandelier over the table, even if the ceiling box is slightly off. A swag hook or a canopy cover can fix the offset.
  • Hanging too high over the table. A chandelier pushed up against the ceiling disconnects from the table and lights the walls instead of the meal.
  • Ignoring the weight. Check that your ceiling box is rated for the weight of the fixture, especially for larger multi-light models.

Frequently asked questions

What size chandelier for a 60 inch round table?

Between 30 and 40 inches wide, keeping at least 6 inches between the chandelier and the table edge all around.

What size chandelier for an 8 ft ceiling?

Keep the chandelier around 20 to 24 inches tall, and choose a flatter or ring-shaped design if it hangs where people walk.

Can a chandelier be too big for a room?

Yes. If it is wider than about two thirds of the table below it, or it hangs lower than 7 ft in a walkway, it will feel crowded. Use the room rule above as your maximum.

Should a dining chandelier be on a dimmer?

We recommend it. Full brightness for homework and cleaning up, low and warm for dinner.
