Pendant Light Sizing Guide: How to Choose the Right Size for Your Table or Island

Choosing the right pendant light size for your kitchen island or dining table is one of the most common lighting questions — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Too small, and the fixture looks lost. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. This guide gives you the exact formulas designers use, so you can shop with confidence.

The Golden Rule: Diameter Formula

The simplest way to size a single pendant is to add the room's length and width in feet, then convert to inches. That number is your ideal fixture diameter.

Example: a 12ft x 10ft dining room → 12 + 10 = 22 → a 22-inch diameter pendant is ideal.

Sizing for a Dining Table

For a pendant centered over a table, a second rule applies: the fixture should measure 50% to 66% of the table's width.

Table Width Ideal Pendant Diameter
36 in 18 - 24 in
48 in 24 - 32 in
60 in 30 - 40 in

Sizing for a Kitchen Island

Islands typically call for two or three smaller pendants rather than one large fixture, spaced evenly along the length. As a rule of thumb, leave about 24-30 inches between each pendant, and keep each fixture between 6-12 inches in diameter for a standard island.

How High Should You Hang It?

The bottom of the pendant should sit 28-34 inches above the table or counter surface. For a standard 8ft ceiling, that means roughly 60-66 inches from the floor to the bottom of the fixture.

If your ceilings are higher than 8ft, add about 3 inches of hanging height for every additional foot of ceiling height.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Hanging too high. A pendant hung too close to the ceiling loses its visual impact and can feel disconnected from the table below.

Choosing a fixture that's too small. This is the most frequent mistake — when in doubt, size up rather than down.

Ignoring the room's overall scale. A fixture that works beautifully in a photo may look tiny in a large, high-ceilinged room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hang a pendant light without a table underneath?

Yes — in an entryway or reading nook, follow the same 28-34 inch clearance rule relative to the floor level where people will be standing or seated nearby, typically keeping the bottom of the fixture at least 6.5-7ft above the floor for walkways.

How many pendants do I need over a long island?

For islands longer than 6ft, three pendants generally look more balanced than two. Divide the island length by the number of fixtures to find even spacing.

Do all pendant lights need a dimmer?

Not required, but highly recommended for dining spaces — the ability to lower the light for evening meals makes a noticeable difference in ambiance.
